VALE OF WHITE HORSE v NEWBURY
At Oxford Brookes University (Harcourt Hill Campus)
The VALE found themselves playing into the gale in the first half and applied themselves brilliantly by keeping the ball low and passing so accurately that they deprived the visitors for long periods.
Very early in the game Wallace, Farmer, Webb and Masters put together a superbly incisive move that resulted in a corner from which Webb found Wallace and his effort went narrowly wide.
Standbridge, Farmer, Sewell and Wallace were winning the midfield battle and were preventing the visitors from launching any meaningful attacks and managed to give Ormrod, Webb and Masters plenty of attacking options.
After 23 minutes Crowther’s goal kick was met by Hart and his lob was misjudged by the keeper who managed to get back and prevent the wind assisted effort from entering the goal. He pushed the ball onto the post and was relieved to see the ball rebound into his arms.
Minutes later the VALE attacked down the right when Masters threaded a ball through for Wallace to run on to and his precision cross was met by Sykes who had lost his marker scored from close range.
Newbury launched an attack in the penultimate minute of the half and Blackwell mistimed his tackle in the penalty area on Hart. Skipper Bailey scored comfortably from the resultant penalty.
HALF – TIME: VALE OF WHITE HORSE 1 NEWBURY 1
The VALE opened the second half with great intensity and determination and in only the third minute the visitors conceded a free kick two metres outside the penalty area and Webb made them pay for it with a beautifully struck curling free kick inside the far post giving the keeper no chance.
The home team were able to push forward at every opportunity and Chedzey, Brinkley and Woodall were able to support the midfield at every opportunity.
In the 13th minute Webb was set free by Woodall and Sewell and his cross was side footed home by the on rushing Masters to give the VALE some breathing space.
The visitors appeared to be tiring after their terrific efforts of the first half and the VALE just got stronger and in quick succession Ormrod smashed an effort against the crossbar and then a minute later set up Masters who was thwarted by Cole in the visitors’ goal.
The VALE were in command and won several corners but the visitors defended stoutly.
In the 21st minute Masters unleashed a vicious drive from 25 metres which was still rising when it flew into the goal and just two minutes later he completed his hat-trick when he scored from a cross by the unselfish Webb.
Three minutes later a corner on the right was not cleared by the visitors and Chedzey ran on to the poor clearance into the wind and lashed a terrific shot from just outside the penalty area past Cole who didn’t move such was the ferocity of the shot.
In the 29th minute of the half Newbury broke away, Blackwell and Allum were outnumbered but the move ended in a rasping drive hitting the bar and going to safety.
