DACORUM v VALE OF WHITE HORSE
Southern Counties Cup – Round Two
At Westbrook Hay School, Hemel Hempstead
The game was played in damp and dreary conditions on a slightly smaller than normal pitch and the VALE boys failed to adjust their game and were consistently over hitting passes. They lacked the accuracy needed in such conditions.
In the 8th minute the VALE conceded a corner on Dacorum’s right. They scored from close range after the goalscorer appeared to handle the ball whilst controlling it. The VALE played plenty of attacking football and Ormrod was causing the home defence a lot of problems. However he and Sewell failed to get a shot on goal and with Webb off colour and on the side lines the VALE lacked any real penetration.
The home defence were well marshalled and organised but Sykes and Wallace were regularly playing balls behind the defence. After 22 minutes Ormrod rounded the defence and crossed but as Sewell came in from the left the home keeper made a great save to cut it out. The Vale’s midfield had matched the home midfield and Standbridge had had an excellent half. Woodall and Chedzey had kept the dangerous Dacorum wide attackers relatively quiet.
HALF – TIME: DACORUM 1 VALE OF WHITE HORSE 0
Dacorum opened the second half very brightly and full of intent, gaining a corner in the first minute which the VALE defence dealt with easily. The home midfield stepped up the speed of the game and a very good bout of interpassing in the 9th minute of the second half released the home 8 who gave Crowther no chance of stopping a well struck shot.
Three minutes later Farmer had the VALE’s first shot on target but it was easily dealt with by the home keeper. Brinkley was restored to the action midway through the half in an attempt to try and nullify the centre midfield player of the home team who was beginning to become increasingly effective and dominant.
Allum and Blackwell were holding firm at the heart of the VALE defence and the latter made a spectacular tackle in the 19th minute to deny a goalscoring opportunity. Crowther brought off a spectacular one handed save to push a shot round the post when a goal seemed certain. With four minutes to go Dacorum were fortunate as the VALE conceded an own goal when a misdirected defensive header gave Crowther no chance.
