VALE OF WHITE HORSE v SWINDON
At Oxford Brookes University (Harcourt Hill Campus)
Although the conditions were overcast Swindon produced some very bright attacking football which the VALE struggled to match. The home boys were forced onto the back foot and the defence was made to work hard to prevent the Swindon boys from taking the lead.
Crowther in the VALE goal was forced to pull off a very good save after 13 minutes but four minutes later could not prevent Lea from giving the away team the lead. He seized upon a misjudged clearance and attacked immediately before unleashing a fine shot that Crowther could not get hands to.
The VALE responded with a fine move down the right initiated by Brinkley who fed Wallace who in turn squared the ball to Farmer. The latter fed Masters who rounded a defender (not for the first time) and his splendid cross evaded Ormrod and Webb with the visiting defence spread-eagled.
The Swindon boys were soon on the attack again and Crowther was again called into action with another point blank save. It seemed inevitable that the away boys would increase their lead but Tyson headed over whilst under pressure from Allum just before half-time.
HALF-TIME: VALE OF WHITE HORSE 0 SWINDON 1
The second half started with the game going from end to end but Swindon were playing the more controlled football and appeared to want to win the game more than the VALE who were still somewhat lethargic, as they had been in the first half.
After 11 minutes a brilliant cross by Masters eluded Chedzey and Sykes at the far post with the Swindon defence caught square. Minutes later some intricate passing between Wallace, Sewell, Standbridge and Webb resulted in the latter being unceremoniously brought down about 3 metres outside the penalty area. Webb took the free kick and squeezed his shot between the defensive wall and the upright to equalise.
This situation was not to remain for long as 3 minutes later Woodall collided with an attacker and went down like a ‘sack of potatoes’. Everyone stopped playing but Swindon realised the whistle had not gone and had a free chance to regain the lead which Skinner took when he side footed home from a Lea cross.
The VALE were struggling to match the opposition and only a brilliant tackle by Blackwell in front of goal prevented Skinner from increasing the lead. Crowther brought off another terrific save three minutes later from a free kick just outside the penalty area.
Just a minute later the VALE defence failed to clear the ball and Tyson fired home from close range. The reorganised VALE defence, when Brinkley could not resume at half time, had not performed up to their normal high standards.
