VALE OF WHITE HORSE v SUTTON
COUNTY LEAGUE FIXTURE
At Oxford Brookes University (Harcourt Hill Campus)
The VALE started in a profligate manner by giving the ball away virtually straight from the kick-off and Sutton passed their way forward at pace until Rudoni received the ball inside the VALE penalty area and the visiting number 8 hit a perfect cross shot from 15 metres which gave Crowther no chance, to put the Surrey boys in the lead after less than a minute.
The Surrey boys are the current form team in the League and they dominated the first quarter of the game with their confident play but the plucky VALE boys maintained their concentration and prevented the visitors from getting into a goal scoring position. Despite being under pressure the VALE were dangerous on the break and Ormrod and Wallace both caused trouble to the visitors with their speed and movement. Endersby in the visitors’ goal was pleased to see efforts from Wallace, Masters and Ormrod go narrowly wide as the VALE gained in confidence.
Sutton consistently posed problems with their slick passing and speed down the flanks.
In the 24 minute Spillane-Davis used his pace to manoeuvre into the VALE penalty area but miss hit his shot. It was his lucky day however as Crowther had the shot well covered before the ball hit a divot and leapt over the VALE keeper’s fully stretched body.
The home boys seemed resolved to make up for the good fortune that the visitors had had and they thrust forward with Webb, Sewell and Standbridge creating half a chance for Masters to burst through and unleash an effort that was inches too high.
Seconds before half-time Blackwell gained possession deep in his own half and he raced forwards unchallenged but his effort from 20 metres ended in the side netting.
HALF – TIME: VALE OF WHITE HORSE 0 SUTTON 2
Playing towards the City end the VALE began to play balls over the visitors defence and it was almost instantly productive when Ormrod latched on to a pass and hurried his shot but it grazed the bar.
Brinkley, Allum, Woodall and Fleming were pushing forward and putting more pressure on to the visitors but the visitors’ defence, though troubled, were holding out.
Sewell had to go off with a calf injury which for a short time seemed to upset the VALE’s playing rhythm.
In the 11th minute Farmer chipped a pass over the Sutton defence and Ormrod used his speed to burst between two defenders and poked the ball past the advancing Endersby to pull a goal back.
Webb and Sykes worked hard down the VALE left to gain several corners, none of which caused much of a threat.
Late on a VALE attack was broken up and Sutton attacked from deep and moved the ball swiftly forward in a sweeping move which resulted in Brinkley brilliantly clearing a goal bound effort off the line.
The game ended with Sutton on the attack but the VALE boys had restricted the Surrey boys to their lowest score (their previous lowest was 4 in their run of victories) for three months.
