VALE OF WHITE HORSE v GLOUCESTER

Witney Cup – Round Two

At Oxford Brookes University (Harcourt Hill Campus)

A chilly breeze did not affect either team too much and both settled into playing some good flowing football with the VALE comfortably matching the current County League leaders in this long awaited Round Two Witney Cup game.

Ormrod had made the alarm bells ring in the visiting defence when he outstripped the cover but could not keep a through ball from Farmer in play.

In the 5th minute he was given another opportunity to seize onto a through ball after good work by Webb and Sykes only for Austin in the visiting goal to deny him with a splendid save.

The VALE were matching the League leaders in all the areas of play and Crowther had had nothing to save when Gloucester had a corner in the 14th minute and Brown’s splendidly struck corner caused problems to the VALE defence who failed to clear and then did not close down Lovell who comfortably beat Crowther with a well struck shot into the corner of the goal.

The home players found it increasingly difficult to penetrate the Gloucester defence with Brennan at the heart of it and Austin showing good hands and positioning.

The VALE defenders of Brinkley, Allum, Blackwell and Woodall matched the Gloucester attackers but could not initiate any attacking moves and as a result the home midfield were more defensive than they like to be.

HALF-TIME: VALE OF WHITE HORSE              0         GLOUCESTER          1

Gloucester threw everything into their opening attack of the second half but Crowther made a really brilliant save at full stretch to prevent Clift from doubling the lead.

The VALE struggled to clear two more corners before Gloucester increased their lead when three defenders left the ball to each other and Agg nipped in to score from close range and give Crowther no chance.

The Gloucester boys were beginning to string their passes together more cohesively than the VALE and were gaining in confidence. Clift gained possession midway in the VALE half and made a determined run past some weak tackles before unleashing a rising drive from 15 metres past Crowther who was left clutching at thin air as the net bulged to give the visitors a slightly flattering scoreline to their lead.

The VALE were still capable of some good passing moves and Sewell found Standbridge who in turn passed to Wallace. He laid the ball off for Masters to run onto and outstrip his defender before planting the ball firmly past Austin. However, the VALE’s celebrations were short-lived as Wallace was adjudged offside by the linesman and the ‘goal’ was disallowed.

With three minutes left Lovell outstripped Chedzey down the visitor’s left and cut in before shooting against the bar, only for the ball to rebound and hit the onrushing Agg in the face and rebound into the goal.
