PORTSMOUTYH v VALE OF WHITE HORSE
At Moneyfields Football Club, Copnor, Portsmouth
The VALE found themselves playing into the gale in the first half but applied themselves superbly with quick interpassing and using the full width of the pitch. Such was the power of the wind however they were unable to get into any scoring positions. The midfield of Standbridge, Farmer, Sewell and Sykes dictated play for the first 10 minutes but in their first breakaway Portsmouth showed their intent with an effort which went wide. Crowther took a quick goal kick to Chedzey whose attempted pass was intercepted and the ball was quickly transferred to the home left wing who cut in and beat Crowther with a fierce left foot cross shot.
This was a wake up call for the VALE and they were then put under considerable pressure as the powerful home midfield asserted themselves by using their strength to hit long telling passes which forced the VALE back four of Chedzey, Blackwell, Allum and Woodall onto the back foot.
One such long ball dissected the visiting defence and only a last minute clearance prevented the home team from going two up. In the process of preventing a goal there was a collision involving several players and an upright and Allum had to leave the field clutching his arm. Brinkley replaced him.
Portsmouth gained several corners as they pressed hard but only one caused any real problems when the visitors failed to clear properly and a vicious shot from the edge of the penalty area struck the upright and rebounded to safety after 23 minutes.
With 2 minutes to half time Portsmouth broke away again and despite Crowther making a magnificent effort to stop the powerful wind assisted shot he could only palm the ball into the goal.
HALF – TIME: PORTSMOUTH 2 VALE OF WHITE HORSE 0
The VALE opened the second half in determined fashion and within minutes Wallace had dissected the home defence for Sykes to latch on to the pass and pull a goal back for the visitors with a splendid finish.
The VALE were given a great lift by this early strike and it was Wallace again who set up Ormrod in the 7th minute of the second half. The striker scored with a scorcher from just outside the penalty area to bring the scores level.
The home team were stung into action and their greater strength and physicality began to tell and they went back into the lead when the VALE defence, with Allum back but Chedzey off injured, lapsed.
Masters and Webb were having quiet games by their standards and with their menace slightly blunted the VALE were put under more pressure and Portsmouth increased their lead by the close.
