VALE OF WHITE HORSE v OXFORD CITY
At Oxford Brookes University (Harcourt Hill Campus)
The VALE opened very brightly and found the prevailing wind to their advantage as it held the ball up whilst the wind did Oxford no favours as they were regularly over hitting passes. The VALE boys were showing no effects from their four week lay-off.
In the third minute the home boys strung together a fantastic move. Crowther rolled the ball out to Woodall who found Webb on the left hand touchline. Webb found Masters in the middle of the field with an excellent pass and the latter in turn found Wallace wide on the right. The visiting defence had been stretched by the speed of the move and Wallace was able to cross but three on rushing attackers could not quite capitalise on it. The move deserved to be converted into a goal.
Crowther made a smart save after 12 minutes and hung on to a fiercely struck free kick by MacBryan shortly afterwards. His handling throughout the half was impeccable.
After 19 minutes Sewell hit a splendid through ball for Ormrod to latch on to. He outstripped the visiting defence and despite the attention of Joseph he drew Wild in the Oxford goal and calmly stroked the ball past him to give the VALE a deserved lead.
HALF-TIME: VALE OF WHITE HORSE 1 OXFORD CITY 0
The VALE defenders had had a solid first half but Chedzey occasionally found Dark a bit of a handful. Woodall, Allum, Chedzey and Blackwell were secure and combined well to clear their lines on those occasions when the visitors threatened the home goal.
Both teams were making light of the wind when it came to taking their corners but no one from either side was able to take advantage of any of the many corners gained by each side.
With the wind behind them the VALE had the greater amount of possession but were trying too hard to make every pass an incisive one. When they resorted to closer passing they became less effective but had greater control of the game.
Farmer, Standbridge, Sewell and Sykes were dominating the midfield and but were unable to create any clear cut chances.
Farmer and Sykes sliced through the visiting defence and the latter’s cross was inches away from being met by Ormrod.
After 22 minutes Masters hit a forty yard crossfield pass to Sykes who bore down on the goal and slotted the ball past Wild to increase the VALE’s lead. Shortly afterwards Wild made a magnificently brave save at the feet of Ormrod to prevent the VALE increasing their lead.
With minutes to go Crowther made a splendid save to deny Dark from pulling a goal back.
